When you find that you ear feels clogged due to excessive wax, you can use ear irrigation to help clear the obstruction. Among the different methods for clearing ears, this one is not the easiest, but it is by far the safest.
What Can Ear Irrigation Do For You
Ear wax irrigation is a process involving water, saline or other cleansing liquid that is used to help remove cerumen from the canal. Wax is typically expelled from the body regularly and unnoticed, but there are cases when the film either does not clear on its own fast enough or when the body simply produces too much. The accumulation of this waxy substance leads to a blockage of the canal, which can cause a reduction in hearing, pain, itchy and dizziness.
An ear irrigation procedure is a safe, effective way to do away with too much earwax. As long as instructions are followed properly, there is no problem with conducting ear irrigation at home. Unlike other popular methods of wax removal, including cotton swabs and curettes, can damage the inside of the ears by causing cuts, abrasions and irritation. If these items are pushed too far into the canal, there is a possibility they will rupture the ear drum.
An ear irrigation system, on the other hand, has no sharp or pointy parts, and the only thing that enters deep enough to cause damage — if it could — is liquid. The greatest risk associated with this method is heating the liquid up too much and causing a burn.
How to Clean Using Ear Irrigation
There are two main types of irrigation systems: the manual kind and the mechanical kind. Manual systems consist of a bulb that is squeezed by hand to expel liquid. An ear irrigation machine requires no manual handling outside the positioning of the nozzle. The mechanical versions are typically found in doctor’s offices, though there are several manufacturers that have models available for private use. Manual systems are much more affordable, in addition to being smaller so they are more portable.
When going through ear irrigation, the two most important things to keep in mind is that you should not try to force the nozzle of the device further than it is supposed to go and that you should constantly monitor the temperature of the solution that you are using.
The water you will use during cleaning should be heated to approximately 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius), as using water that is too hot can causes burns and water that is either too hot or cold can cause severe dizziness. A thermometer should always be used to ensure the correct temperature is reached.
Once the mixture is properly warmed, it will be added to the bulb. While standing upright, you will insert the nozzle into your canal. Depending on the system you purchase, it may be required that you use a pre-rinse that will help loosen and soften wax. To help prevent a mess, you should stand over a sink or have towels or a bowl situated on the side of your face to catch the water that will be dispelled. The entire process takes only minutes per side, but if you feel pain at anytime during the cleansing, you should stop.
The plugging of an ear canal happens all the time. The condition can be bothersome at the least and downright painful at the worst.
